UPDF Observes 12th Anniversary of Naniachar Massacre

November 17, 2005. In observance of the Naniachar Massacre Day the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) held a mass rally at T & T area of Naniachar in Rangamati District.
Presided over by UPDF leader Bipulaksh Chakma, the rally was also addressed by UPDF leader Jewel Chakma, Finance Secretary of Chittagong Hill Tracts Democratic Youth Forum Michael Chakma, Hill Women’s Federation leader Konica Dewan, PCP leader Aungyo Marma, Union Parishad Members Sentu Chakma and Juno Chakma and a respected elder Binoy Krishna Khisha.
About one thousand people took part in the programme, which began at 11:30 A. M. and ended at 2 P.M.
The armed members of the Jana Samhati Samiti prevented many from taking part in the rally, alleged Jewel Chakma when reporting on the programme by telephone from Naniachar.

Army raids villages in Naniachar, detains innocent fishermen
Rangamati: 28 September 2005: A group of armymen from Naniachar zone led by Major Shamim raided the villages of Mahajon Para and Betchari Duar Mukh under Naniachar Thana of the district. The soldiers carried out massive searches in some houses and a tea shop in the name of what they said hunting down terrorist elements.
After failing to find any terrorist or anything incriminating, the soldiers caught six innocent fishermen, bound them with a rope and took them to the camp. The arrested are Montu Bikash Chakma (24), his brother Rintu Chakma (18) s/o Joy Mongol Chakma and Sudhur Moy Chakma (20) Shoshanko Karbari of village Shonkhola Para, Doya Ranjan Chakma (40) s/o Chandra Moni Chakma of village Betchari Mukh, Sofol Jyoti Chakma (30) s/o Pran Bihari Chakma of village Jogona Toli and Rupia Chakma (27) s/o Shanti Moy Chakma of village Boyattyo Para Shongrachari Mukh. They had been held for about two hours in the camp and were subjected to interrogation.
Later, as there was no evidence to link up to any kind of terrorist activities, the army set them free and returned a seal of Doshbol Bano Vihar, which they found during the search at the tea shop.
The name of those whose houses were searched are Amrita Chakma (66) s/o Arjun Moni Chakma (Mohajon Para), Lakshimi Dhon Dewan (30) s/o Sukriti Dewan (Mohajon Para), Anil Chandra Chama (55) S/o Suponnya Chakma (Betchari Mukh), Sukh Moy Chakma (40) s/o Ashwatto Ranjon Karbari (Betchari).
Apart from those houses, the army soldiers also searched a tea shop belonging to Aloron Dewan (55) s/o Rajendra Lal Dewan at Mohajon Para village. They rummaged through the goods in the shop but failed to find any arms or anything incriminating.
