Armed JSS men set fire to Dighinala UPDF Office

June 06, 2005: The government-backed Jana Samhati Samiti armed cadres set fire to the office of the Dighinala unit of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) late last night.

The overnight JSS attack came nearly one month after the successful holding of the June 7 rally against illegal land grabbing in the CHT. The JSS armed groups and the army tried to sabotage the rally which was held in Khagrachari district town. The rally drew, in spite of threats, intimidation and harassment, an estimated 8 thousand people from across the CHT.

This is the second time the government-backed Jana Samhati Samiti carried out attack on the Dighinala unit office of the UPDF. Earlier on 2 December 2003 the armed JSS members carried out a similar attack, shot one UPDF member dead, wounded two and set the office ablaze.
